Student Backups

ITS does not offer a backup service to students. All students should ensure that their data are backed up regularly. At a minimum, purchase a USB disk and make copies of all your files and folders on your USB disk. You might also consider using your PASS space to make backups. Any piece of information which is not located in two different places should be considered in danger of immediate loss.

Faculty & Staff PC Backups

ITS Recommends Against the C Drive. The easiest way to make sure your data are backed up is to save your files to network drives, which are backed up automatically. See Storage on the Network for more information.

If you do use your C Drive, ITS will provide backups to any University-owned PC used by any faculty or staff for University-related business. Your machine may already be regularly backed up!

How Do I Know If My PC Is Being Backed Up? Click on your Start Menu, then All Programs, then Utilities, then Backup, then Symantec Backup Exec, then the Symantec Backup Exec Desktop Agent. If you see that a "next scheduled job" is mentioned, you are being backed up. If not, submit a Service Request to ITS. If you don't see the Symantec Backup Exec Desktop Agent, submit a Service Request to ITS.

Want to Get Backed Up? Follow the steps above, and if you aren't already being backed up, submit a Service Request to ITS.

Faculty & Staff Laptop Backups

First, read the section above to determine if your laptop is already configured for regular backups. But since your laptop may only be connected to our network occasionally, even if it IS scheduled for regular backups, it may not be regularly backed up. All laptop users should ensure that their data are backed up regularly. At a minimum, purchase a USB disk and make copies of all your files and folders on your USB disk. You might also consider using your PASS space to make backups. Any piece of information which is not located in two different places should be considered in danger of immediate loss.

Large-Scale Backups

ITS utilizes University Park's Tivoli Storage Manager service to create nightly offsite backups at University Park for all the Symantec backups we take from PCs at PSH. We use the same service to backup all of our Windows and Sun Solaris servers. Thus all of PSH's large-scale data backups are stored at University Park.
