Penn State Harrisburg is deeply committed to providing all students with the opportunity to further their education. The Office for Disability Services provides students with disability accommodations to minimize the effects of their disabilities. Each year, more students with disabilities are planning to continue their education at postsecondary schools, such as Penn State Harrisburg. Many students assume that the support they received in high school will automatically transfer to college. This is not the case. Services and accessing those services is significantly different in college than it is in high school. To learn about the differences please visit this powerpoint presentation. In college, students are covered under Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act, 1973, and the Americans with Disabilities Act Amendments Act of 2008. In high school, they were covered under the Individual with Disabilities Act. Therefore, it is in the best interest of students entering college to know their rights and responsibilities under Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act, 1973, and the Americans with Disabilities Act Amendments Act of 2008. Doing so will improve the opportunity to succeed in a postsecondary education. The website, http://www2.ed.gov/policy/rights/guid/ocr/disability.html, has valuable information.
Students, current or future, are encouraged to schedule an appointment with the Disability Services Coordinator to review the process of securing accommodations at Penn State Harrisburg.
